Paul George and the Los Angeles Clippers were unable to reach a contract agreement last season, prompting George to leave and sign a four-year, $211 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. However, considering that he is currently averaging just 17 points on a 76ers team that’s sitting in 11th place in the Eastern Conference, this contract seems questionable. George has missed 15 out of the Sixers’ first 45 games due to knee, ankle, and groin injuries, and he also sat out a game against the Lakers because of a finger injury. At 34 years old, with a history of injuries, the Philadelphia 76ers need to find a way to move on from this challenging contract with Paul George as quickly as possible.
One way to approach the situation is by taking advantage of the discord between Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat. Butler has requested a trade and has reportedly become a distraction for the team. He has faced a series of suspensions: initially, he was suspended for seven games, came back from that suspension, and was suspended again for two games for missing the team’s flight, and now he has been suspended indefinitely for walking out of practice after being informed that he was being removed from the starting lineup. An indefinite suspension requires the Miami Heat to suspend him for at least five games, which aligns with the upcoming NBA trade deadline.
Butler left the Philadelphia 76ers in 2019 to join the Miami Heat in a sign-and-trade deal. He has a player option at the end of this season that would pay him over $50 million, or he can opt out of the contract and become a free agent. If Philadelphia could convince the Heat to take on Paul George and his unfavorable contract in exchange for Jimmy Butler, it would be a win-win for them. This trade would not only provide Philadelphia with financial flexibility, but it could also help them rebuild their roster.
