Golden State Warriors veteran Draymond Green recently appeared on national television and claimed that with the addition of Jimmy Butler, the Warriors will win a Championship. Jimmy Butler has played four games for the Warriors so far, during which the team has achieved a 3-1 record. Currently, the Warriors sit at 28-27 and hold the 10th place in the Western Conference standings. What baffles me the most about Green’s statement is that during the four games Butler has played with the Warriors, they defeated the Bulls, Bucks, and Rockets (Golden State loss to the Mavericks)—teams that are not exactly NBA powerhouses.
Draymond Green highlighted an important shift in the Golden State Warriors’ dynamics with the arrival of Jimmy Butler, noting that the team had previously been struggling to establish its identity. With Butler on the roster, the Warriors feel more capable of competing against any team in the NBA. While confidence is a common trait among professional athletes, it is crucial to differentiate between genuine confidence and unrealistic expectations.

One major concern for the Warriors is the age of their key players, all of whom are in their thirties. For the team to have a shot at winning a championship, securing a playoff spot is a prerequisite. Even if they qualify and enter the playoffs as a lower seed, there are doubts about their ability to defeat formidable opponents like the Oklahoma City Thunder or the Memphis Grizzlies in a best-of-seven series
Some people believe that all the Warriors need to do is make it to the playoffs and anything could happen. However, I don’t share that viewpoint. The Warriors won their last championship in 2022 but lost to the Lakers 4-2 in the Western Conference semi-finals. The following season, Golden State failed to qualify for the playoffs. Now, the idea of them winning a championship in 2025 seems far-fetched.
