Shedeur Sanders experienced a dramatic fall from being projected as a top-three pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to being selected in the fifth round by the Cleveland Browns. This marks the most significant drop in NFL draft history. Let’s explore the reasons behind this unexpected turn of events.
Shedeur Sanders is the son of Dion Sanders, a loudmouth NFL Hall of Famer who talked the talk but also walked the walk. Now, many have noted that Shedeur is not as good as his father was, but walks around with the same level of confidence. Which is a problem in the eyes of some, because when it comes to black athletes, you’re expected to be humble. This is something that the Sanders are not, and trust me when I say certain suits in the NFL have a problem with this, which is why Sanders’ stock dropped so far.
Dion Sanders publicly stated that there were teams that he would not allow his son to play for. Making statements like this ruffle some feathers, but in Dion’s defense, the only reason why he would make a statement like this, is because he know some of the inner workings of some of these organizations and knows what they do behind the scenes would not be productive to his son’s growth in the NFL.
As a parent, I understand that, but I would have kept that between my son’s agent and me, and I would have wanted to keep it out of the papers. I wouldn’t want my child to come into the league as the NFL’s most hated when he hasn’t even put on an NFL uniform. But on the other hand, I’m not Dion Sanders. He’s rich and can deal with the backlash from the NFL (I can’t). Every antic the Sanders have pulled, whether it was publicly stating they wouldn’t play for specific teams, or not attending NFL teams’ workouts, they knew the consequences and were alright with them.
Now that Sander’s in with the Cleveland Browns, we have to wait to see what happens from here. Kenny Pickett is projected to be the Browns’ starting quarterback, and they have also signed Joe Flacco to a one-year deal. DeShun Watson is also still on the roster. So with a jam log of quarterbacks on the roster, I really wouldn’t be surprised if Shedeur doesn’t see the field in his first NFL season.
