As LeBron James enters the final year of his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, there is a strong possibility that the 2025-26 NBA season could be his last. James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, has won four NBA Championships and four NBA Finals MVP awards. However, given the Lakers’ current roster, it is disappointing that he may not have the opportunity to compete for another NBA Championship in his farewell season. His situation is reminiscent of Michael Jordan’s time with the Washington Wizards, where he was also far from winning a championship.
Lebron is as close to winning another Championship in Los Angeles as Michael Jordan was to winning a championship when he (Michael Jordan), played for the Washington Wizards. This makes me wonder: outside of earning the 51 million dollars the Lakers owe him, what other incentive does Lebron have to return to the game? I guess we can throw in the fact that he’ll get another year to be around his son, Bronny, for another season, but other than that, why come back?
ThisĀ brings me to an important point: instead of losing one of the greatest players in NBA history for nothing, why not trade him to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for some of their players and draft picks? This trade would benefit both teams. For the Thunder, it would provide the veteran presence they urgently need, while for the Lakers, it would help them prepare for life after LeBron.
The only potential issue with this trade is LeBron’s loyalty to Los Angeles. He is aware that the fanbase loves him, and leaving the city would significantly impact the organization’s ticket sales, viewership, and overall finances. LeBron has never requested a trade and has always fulfilled his contractual obligations. Therefore, convincing him to play for the Thunder will be challenging. However, once he arrives in Oklahoma City and experiences their strong winning culture, he may feel right at home. This could allow him to relax, focus on basketball, and aim for retiring with five championship rings..
