
Former Kansas basketball standout and NBA veteran Rex Walters is making his return to the college coaching ranks. Walters has been named the new head coach at Regis University. A Division II program in Denver, Colorado.
Walters played two seasons at Kansas (1991–1993) after transferring from Northwestern. He helped lead the Jayhawks to the 1993 Final Four. Afterwards, he then enjoyed an eight-year NBA career. He played for the New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, and Miami Heat before moving into coaching.
Over the years, Walters built an extensive coaching résumé. This includes head coaching stops at Florida Atlantic and the University of San Francisco. He also took on a role as assistant at Nevada, Wake Forest, and in the NBA with the Detroit Pistons and Charlotte Hornets.
This hire marks Walters’ first head coaching position since 2016. This allows him to rebuild Regis. Who plays in the competitive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC)?
Walters is known for his high basketball IQ and leadership skills. He is expected to bring a professional-level approach to the Regis University Rangers’ program.
“I’m grateful for the chance to lead this program and help our players grow both on and off the court,” Walters said in a statement. “Regis has a strong tradition, and I’m excited to build on that foundation.”
The Rangers are coming off a challenging season, but with Walters at the helm, fans are hopeful for a quick turnaround and a return to winning basketball in Denver.
