Jason Kidd Would Be Foolish To Coach The Knicks

Jason Kidd’s name has been thrown around now that the New York Knicks have fired Tom Thibodeur. Kidd is still with the Dallas Mavericks until the end of the 2026-27 season. However, the New York media reports that the Knicks will ask the Mavericks for permission to speak with Kidd.

The question that crosses my mind is, “Why would Jason Kidd want to coach the New York Knicks?” This organization fired a coach who got them to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in twenty-five years. Coach Tibbs helped the Knicks make the playoffs four out of the five seasons he coached there. He also coached the Knicks to back-to-back 50-plus seasons, which the Knicks haven’t done since the early nineties.

Not to mention, Jason Kidd would be leaving a Dallas Mavericks team expected to draft Cooper Flagg. The Duke product is expected to be a generational talent. Placing Flagg alongside a healthy Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis could spell trouble in the Western Conference.

No stability

The Knicks organization is well-known for its inconsistency. From 2010 to 2020, they changed coaches eight times. However, Tom Thibodeau brought a degree of stability and helped to establish a winning tradition for the franchise. After Thibodeau’s firing, the Knicks’ president explained that the decision was made because the team failed to achieve its goal of winning a championship. This reasoning seems irrational, especially considering that the Knicks haven’t reached the NBA Finals since 1999. It seems unrealistic to believe that simply adding Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges to the roster would suddenly turn them into a championship-caliber team. This shows that the Knicks are out of touch with reality. Additionally, the media coverage is often harsh, and the fan base will turn on Kidd in a New York minute.
