The Memphis Grizzlies were swept out of the 2025 NBA playoffs by the Oklahoma City Thunder. Entering as the 8th seed, Memphis suffered a 51-point blowout loss in Game 1 and a 19-point defeat in Game 2. In Game 3, they squandered a 29-point lead, and despite a fierce battle in Game 4, they ultimately lost 117-115 in the deciding match..
One of the primary issues with the Memphis Grizzlies is that they struggle to win without Ja Morant. They were up 29 points before Morant suffered an injury in the second quarter of game 3, and the Thunder stormed back to win. Though Morant has been a star in the league, he’s been an unreliable star. If he’s not suspended for carrying guns and showing them off on social media, he’s injured.
Desmond Bane has recently signed a $207 million extension, yet he hasn’t demonstrated the ability to lead the Grizzlies. Last season, Ja Morant played only nine games, and Memphis finished with a record of 27-55. In contrast, Desmond Bane played 79 games, and Jaren Jackson Jr. appeared in 66 games. This further supports my point that Memphis can’t win without Ja Morant.
The Grizzlies’ big three—Ja Morant, Bane, and Jaren Jackson Jr.—are set to earn a combined $98 million next season. However, I question whether this payout is truly justified. I say no, which is why I would advocate for the Grizzlies to try to clear some money off their books.. No, I’m not saying they should tear it all down, but Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. should be the first out the door.
Jaren Jackson Jr. has a contract that expires at the end of next season, making him a valuable asset to trade this summer. Similarly, Ja Morant’s reckless style of basketball often keeps him sidelined with injuries. Why not consider trading these two to a city like Brooklyn, which needs star players? This trade could provide valuable draft picks and a few players, while also alleviating some of the team’s financial burden. Let Brooklyn deal with the headaches of having a point guard who stays hurt because he thinks he can fly, and a big in Jaren Jackson Jr, who’s already reached his peak.
